Around The World

Around the world there are lots of girl guides and girl scouts just like you! Many wear different uniforms. During your Brownies journey, we’ll find out about them.

World Thinking Day

The 22nd February each year is World Thinking Day, when girl guides and girl scouts - including Brownies - celebrate friendship.

Rosebuds

The Girl Guide movement was founded in 1909. A group of girls attended a Boy Scout Rally declaring themselves to be Girl Scouts. Lord Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of Boy Scouts, decided that there should be a Movement for girls.

In 1914 a group for girls under 11 was set up, initially called Rosebuds but renamed to Brownies the following year.

The Brownie Promise

The Promise is a shared commitment to be an active citizen, help others, develop our beliefs and respect those of others.

When you are ready, you will make your Promise and receive your Promise pin.

“Twist me and turn me and show me the elf, I looked in the water and there saw...”

“I promise that I will do my best, to be true to myself and develop my beliefs, to serve the King and my community, to help other people and to keep the Brownie Guide Law.”

Flying the nest

When it’s time to move onto Guides, Brownies fly the nest and jump over the toadstool. Girls can start Guides from 10 years old. A Guide can volunteer at Rainbows and Brownies units.

  • With your Brownie friends you lend a hand and try to do your best. So, we join together to wish you well now you fly the nest!

Exciting adventures await at Guides and many new things to learn. Enjoy the challenges along your path and the badges you will earn.

You can reach every crest and summit, no matter how steep. Dream big and aim high: it’s time to make the leap..

What is a Brownie?

A Brownie is a magical little creature, a good natured elf, which slips into houses very early before anyone is awake. It tidies toys, folds clothes, washes dishes and does all sorts of helpful things.

Read the Brownie story on the Girlguiding website to find out more and discover the meaning behind our Brownie Promise ceremony.

Opening & Closing

At the start and end of every meeting we form a circle. This is our traditional way to welcome new members and say hello and goodbye to each other.

  • We’re Brownie Guides, we’re Brownie Guides, we’re here to lend a hand.

To think of others before ourselves, and help our homes and lands.

We’re Brownie friends, we’re Brownie friends, in North, South, East and West.

We’re joined together in our wish to try to do our best.

  • Sang to Brownie Bells.

    We’re Brownie Guides,
    our meeting’s passed,
    we’ve had such fun,
    time goes so fast.
    Goodnight, goodnight.

Taking Part

Time To Listen

When a leader or helper puts their hand up, everyone should put their hand up, stay still and listen.

Be Kind and Helpful

Let’s look after each other and respect what makes each of us different. Encourage and support everyone around you.

Do Your Best

Don’t be afraid to try something new. Give everything a chance. Practice makes perfect. Mistakes and failures help us to learn.

Activities at Brownies

We play games and sport, indoors and out.

We build, bake, make, paint and draw things.

We try things out and experiment.

Adventures

Explore, discover and try new things. Throughout the year we offer opportunities to take part in trips, events and experiences.
